Love Is In The Air
“This is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another.” 1 John 3:11
The following devotional on love was written by my dear friend Dr. Marilyn Murphree. It is taken from the first of her devotional books, Moments with Marilyn (Volume 1).
A woman told her husband she was going on a diet. On Valentine’s Day he got her a beautiful heart-shaped candy box. She was thrilled until she opened it and found it filled with bean sprouts! He won the Heinous-husband award that year.
When Love is in the Air
Valentine’s Day is a special day to surprise someone with a card or a gift and show that he or she is special. As Christians, showing love toward others should be our lifestyle. Sometimes Christians are quick to say, “I love you with the love of the Lord,” and then fail to follow it up with actions. It has been said, “Real love is an action – not a feeling.”
God didn’t love us because we were so lovable, but because it was His nature to do so. He poured out His love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit; and while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Jesus said, “Love each other as I have loved you.” (John 15:12). We can’t do it within ourselves, because as soon as we try to love the unlovable people He brings across our pathway, we blow it again and again.
As we grow in the Lord, He continues to put His love into our hearts; and it’s there when we need it. We probably don’t realize how some of the people we like to be around the least are really people God has sent our way. Let us practice spilling out a little bit of love and kindness upon them. It has been said that love in action is the language that the deaf can hear and the blind can see.
Love in Action
The Bible speaks of this love in action. Do our actions say that we really love others? Love requires more than idle talk or exalted theology. It requires simple acts in order to meet the needs of others. Any expression that fails this test is hollow. Can people see the love of Jesus in us by our actions as well as our words?
