First Steps to Develop a Mindset of Gratitude

To cultivate a genuine attitude of gratitude, it is essential to adopt a mindset that values everything in your life and recognizes that nothing should be taken for granted. Let’s consider some steps to cultivate a mindset of gratitude.

Step by step

Reflect on your blessings every day and express gratitude to God.

It will take practice to adopt this outlook daily. We all lead busy lives, but we must make room for gratitude. Ask God to make you mindful of the need to grow in thankfulness.

If you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, you have the Holy Spirit living within you.  He is there to make positive changes in your life.  If you ask Him to make you more thankful, He will.

Many people take everything they have for granted. Think about what your life would be like if you lost your health. Are you grateful for your health? Where would you be if you had significant health problems?  What if you had constant pain every day?  If you suddenly had your health taken away, how would you deal with it?

What if you no longer had a car?  What if you were denied access to the people in your social circle?  What if you lost your job?  What if your spouse or child left you?  How would losing these make you feel?  Pretty bad, right?  Now, imagine gradually regaining all of these things. Would you be grateful?  Of course!

Start by finding happiness in what you have.

One of the best ways to find things to be grateful for is to choose to be happy for the people, activities, situations, opportunities, and material things that you have in your life right now. Many people reserve their gratitude for what they feel are the most important things in life, such as meeting the man or woman of their dreams, getting a promotion at work, taking a nice vacation, or having a baby.  They overlook what they already have.

Here are some easy things you can do to help yourself become a grateful person:

As soon as you awaken each day, thank God that you have another day of life. Seeing life as a gift will help you to appreciate your life right now.  Remember the old song, “Count Your Blessings?”  It is a reminder to look for the good things in your life. Just thinking about them can give you a genuine lift and bring you joy.

Question:
Are you willing to commit to identifying the minor things in life that you tend to take for granted and becoming grateful for these things? If so, you can develop a mindset of gratitude.

Thanking and praising God helps eliminate negativity and complaining.  We can be optimistic, knowing that we are blessed and that God will continue to bless us.  When we find ourselves complaining, it’s a good time to stop and change our words into expressing gratitude for our blessings instead.  A positive person is much happier and content than a negative person.

Psalm 7:17  I will praise the Lord according to His righteousness,
And will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High.  NKJV

Look at the small things around you.

Life is full of small things that you might not have thought about as blessings. As you begin to recognize these blessings, you will appreciate your life much more. For example, make yourself more aware of nature. When you see a colorful butterfly, hear a cheerful bird song, enjoy a glowing sunset, smell a flower, or are filled with wonder at the beauty of the sun shining on glistening snow, recognize that nature can bring you moments of peace, beauty, wonder, and exhilaration.  Experience the awe of knowing that nature expresses God’s artistic handiwork. He has shown His love to us by blessing us with the colors and beauty of nature.

Give thanks and praise to the Lord.

Take a few moments to think about this:  What part of nature brings you the most joy or wonder?  What words can you say to God right now to thank Him for this?

Think about the variety of food you eat every day.  Consider the fact that you have air to breathe, water to drink, and the energy to do the things that you need and want to do. Yes, these things are simple, but when you truly acknowledge and appreciate them, you will find yourself thanking God for them.   Then you will be more content with your life.

A mindset of gratitude reminds us that God is the Giver of all good gifts.  He is our Provider.  Thanking God for His provision helps us to overcome struggles with our financial or social status.  Instead, we can rely on Him to lead us, showing us what He wants us to be.  This brings contentment.

Recognize your gifts.

God created you to have creativity.  Every part of your life, both good and bad, has shaped you into a unique person with much to create and share with others.  God gave you special talents and abilities.  He wants to give you spiritual gifts also.  Acknowledge these, and thank Him for them.  Ask Him to use you through these gifts to serve Him and others.  Using what He has given you for the benefit of others is a special way to show gratitude.

James 1:17  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.  NKJV
