My Birthday Letter from God
by Karen S. Roberts
Did you ever feel like God wrote you a special letter? That’s how I felt yesterday, which was a milestone birthday, starting a new decade in my life..
My Birthday Psalm
I’ve been reading though a portion of the Psalms lately. Most days I contemplatively make my way through one or more of them, although I must admit that Psalm 119 (the longest chapter in the Bible) took me more than one day. I journal what God shows me as I read. Sometimes things have come up that have kept me from reading a Psalm at all. And I’ve felt a bit guilty about that.
But God has perfect timing. Yesterday I “just happened” to read Psalm 139, which was the next one in my progression through the Psalms. As I read, I thought, “Wow! this is the perfect Psalm for my birthday.”
Isn’t it amazing that words given by God hundreds of years ago can be so relevant today? I couldn’t stop underlining some verses that were jumping out at me. God was speaking to me through them. That in itself was an awesome birthday present.
My Personalized Psalm 139
Then it came to me that I could personalize parts of this Psalm into a “Letter from God.” Ideas were coming to me, but it took until today for it to come together into what I feel God is saying in a personal way to me and to you.
My hope is that this letter will speak to you, even if it’s not your birthday. Just put your name in the blanks.
Dear You,
Dear ___________,
Sometimes you feel that I am far away and do not care about you. So today on your birthday, I want to remind you of how special you are to Me.
I knew about you and planned you before you existed. When you were conceived, I was there, forming you in your mother’s womb. As you developed, I was there, skillfully weaving you into exactly the person I want you to be. I watched over you and continued to form you. You were not hidden from my sight, even as you are not hidden from me today.
And when you were born, I had a plan for a perfect path for your life ahead of you. Yet I knew you would not always choose that path, and so I have readjusted it for you over the course of your years.
You are precious to me, and I have good thoughts about you every day. In fact, I have an uncountable number of thoughts about you and about how I want to bless you as you follow me.
I search your heart and completely know and understand your thoughts. I know where you are every second. There is no place you can go that I don’t go with you. Even if you are trying to hide from me, I am there pulling on your spirit – trying to bring you back to an intimate relationship with me.
I watch over you as you sleep and know when you get up. I have put hedges in front of you and behind you to protect you. You can never imagine how many times I have protected you from something or someone, and you did not know it.
_____________, my hand is upon you. I call you to Myself. Let me lead you and hold you.
I long to bring light into your darkness. Darkness is nothing to me, for my light shines into and overcomes
the darkness.
But you must invite me. I do not force anyone to come into a close relationship with Me. I offer it, but you must come.
You ask, “How do I come?”
Pray these words and mean them:
Search me, oh God, and know my heart;
Try me, and know my fears and anxieties.
And see if there are any wicked ways in my heart;
And lead me in Your everlasting way.”
This prayer will bring you back to Me if you have strayed. When you sincerely reach out to me, I will reveal the deep things of your heart and of Mine.
I know exactly how many days you have left upon this earth. You do not know if they are many or few. But I know. Spend them with Me.
I love you, my child,
Your Heavenly Father
This is perfect. Just love the truth and personal love and care from the one who created us. Thank you for this beautiful letter.
That was great! I recently read this Psalm and was fascinated about the idea that God’s thoughts for each of us are more than all the grains of sand. I looked up how to measure that out. I found a video where it showed even in just one cubic foot, there are about 1.5 Million grains of sand. So I’m not sure if the verse implies in all the world, or all the exposed sand on all the beaches and deserts, or even just one cubic foot. His thoughts for each of us are more than we can imagine!
