Why Do We Suffer?
Update from editor, Karen S. Roberts, 1/30/2022: Yesterday I was so sad to learn that our sister in the Lord, Carolyn Wuebbles, passed away. Carolyn carried on an online ministry through Facebook. Hundreds of people were blessed by the gems of wisdom and truth that she shared. We will greatly miss her!
The following devotional as written in 2013. Carolyn graciously shared her thoughts on suffering with us. Take a few moments to ponder what she shared.
I know that she now no longer suffers. She is with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
WHY SO MUCH SUFFERING?
by Carolyn Wuebbles
We hear the questions asked continually, “If God loves us then why is this happening to us? Why do we have to suffer so much? I cannot believe that a God that loves so much would allow His own to suffer.”
I am soon to be sixty seven years young, and I have studied His Word for quite some time now, in fact over half of those years I have kept my nose in the Bible. I also believe that it takes a lifetime to walk in love, with God, and to learn how to survive and be as happy in those years as possible. I have seen so many things in my own years that God has taken and used for my good and His honor and glory, and to be truthful and blunt with you….I had nothing to do with His plan. He did it all. But today, I can tell you that it is through His love, mercy and grace that I survived….nothing good nor bad that I did caused me to survive….it was through the blood of Jesus Christ!
So why did He allow me to make those wrong choices instead making me to do the right ones?
Our Father does not make us to make any choices; although He will speak to us in many ways, using many peoples, things, songs, as well as His written Word to convince us to go the other direction. ~~Deut.30:19~~ He knows that I am grown up enough to choose to do the right thing, as well as the wrong thing, but…the most wonderful part about the grace of God is that even when we are choosing the wrong thing out of ignorance of His Word or a knowing in our hearts, He still walks with us and talks with us and helps us to realize the effect it is having on our lives.
Because of Jesus Christ: Crucified, buried, arose and ascended back to the Father, God took all His wrath on Him that would have been taken out on us. He has removed the curse of sin, sickness, death and poverty. Jesus did it all…all that the Law couldn’t do…all that the blood of animals couldn’t do…all that we couldn’t do….He did it once…He did it for good…He did it all…He did it once and for all! He never condemns us, so when you feel condemned, you can know it is not our Father doing the condemning. ~~Rom.8:1…There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.~~
“But why do these things happen?” you ask. I believe He is trying to get our attention. We didn’t pay attention to that still, small voice that kept warning us and telling us to turn around, because if we don’t we are headed for a big let-down or fall. When we listen to Him, He will always show us a different way…a better and safer way. One that does not put you in the wilderness with the evil one and his snares and traps just waiting for you to step into one of them.
The only time you could be in a place of danger that God orchestrated, is one that He knows you are strong enough, and grounded enough in His love and grace and Written Word, to know to keep your eyes on Him, and not the problem or the danger. He might be using you to lead someone else out of their dark situation and to His glorious light.
But…truth of the matter is…we never know what is happening, or why…but we know that He is with us every step of the way, when we are His child. We are covered by the blood of Jesus, and everything we do is through His grace, and because of this, we will find grace to help us in the time we need it. We have that promise with many, many others. ~~Heb.4:16~~
Please don’t get discouraged with yourself, for He is still there to catch us when we fall! Once you are a child of the KING, you will stay a child of the KING. Just run into His open arms, crawl up on His lap and let Him love you and heal you back into wholeness. His blood saved you and delivered you from the wrath that is to come. When we start doing things contrary to His will, then we are putting our lives in jeopardy, and there will be an effect of that thing, whatever it was, and God knows this because of the laws He set forth when He said, “While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, Cold and heat, Winter and summer, And day and night shall not cease.” Gen.8:22~~ Seedtime and harvest are not only talking about grain, it is talking about words spoken…for words are seeds also.
The Hebrew children put blood on their doorposts to save them, and then they stayed inside because they knew they would be covered by the blood of the lamb that was slain. How much more secure can we be when we know that we are covered by the blood of the Son of God. So…we must stay inside and rest in Him. He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High, shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. ~~Psm.91:1~~
He will never leave you, nor forsake you, but you will be chastised….not killed…not beaten by Him….chastised…and it is with His Word that He does it. ~~Heb.12:8~~ Remember, it was the thief who came but to steal, kill and destroy….but Jesus came that we may have life, enjoy it, and have it more abundantly. see ~~John 10:10~~
As He told the women caught in adultery, “Where are your accusers? Then He said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more. ” I believe He told her, “Don’t allow anyone to accuse you nor condemn you, and now that you have met with Me, you can go and you won’t sin anymore – because you have met the Lamb that took away your sin, and the sin of the world.
His Word is a sharp and two-edged sword that divides soul from the spirit. He will use it to cause you to come to yourself. He will use it to cut right through the soulish part of you, dividing your thoughts which are causing you to feel condemned, and get right to the matter of the heart. He uses it to cause you to not believe those condemning thoughts coming from what you are thinking and feeling in your soul (mind, will, and emotions), and He speaks to your heart (your spirit being where He abides), that He loves you and has supplied you with all the mercy and grace you will ever need. For He made it new every day for us. ~~Lam.3:22-23~~ He will welcome you with open arms and get out the fatted calf, and love you. ~~Luke 15: 11-32~~
He is the best thing that ever happened to me! Choose to make Him the best thing that ever happened to you. Make Jesus Lord and the center of your life and have a wonderful week spent getting to know the Savior more and more. He is the friend that sticks by you through everything good, everything bad…He is right there with you. Talk to Him. Let Him talk to you.
