Transform Your Workplace
Have you ever felt like your workplace is such a place of spiritual darkness that you can have no effect there as a Christian? It’s easy to get discouraged when you are the only follower of Jesus Christ in the place where you are employed. Unless your place of employment requires you to do unethical things, you can be assured that God has placed YOU in your place of employment for a purpose. It is your mission field, and you are His ambassador in that workplace.
Rather than looking at the negatives and spiritual darkness, look for opportunities to be a light for Jesus where you work. If people see a smile on your face and sense peace within you, even when things are stressful, they will wonder what makes you different. Pray each day, “Lord, I’m available to be used by You. Open the doors for me to share You with my coworkers.” Look at your work day as an adventure in which God will use you to touch the lives of the people around you.
You may find simple ways at work to mention prayer, thankfulness, peace, and how things are working together for good in your life. You don’t have to preach at people. God will open the way for them to begin sharing their needs with you, and simple statements such as, “I’ll be praying for you.” will lay the foundation for more in depth sharing as time goes by.
You don’t have to be in a majority to transform the atmosphere of your workplace. Pray throughout the day as you work. If possible, go in early and pray over the area where you work, inviting the Holy Spirit to touch people’s lives and to use you. Worship while you work. Whenever God opens a door for you or helps you solve a problem, give Him thanks and praise, even it you have to do it under your breath.. Throughout the day, tell Him how wonderful He is. Praise changes the atmosphere and brings in the Presence of God!
Ask God to give you insights to solve problems and to make helpful suggestions to your employer. Ask Him to keep you from making mistakes on the job and to be a very productive worker who builds up those you work with. With God’s wisdom, you can unravel mysteries in the workplace. Pray in the Spirit while you work, and you’ll be amazed to see how God uses you and gives you wisdom and favor.
Resist entering into gossip if some workers are talking against other workers or against a supervisor. Look for positives about the place you work, and point them out. If you eat in a lunchroom at work, don’t be ashamed to bow your head and thank God for your food. (Because I do this at work, another worker recently began doing so as well.)
If you work with customers or clients, let them see the joy of the Lord in you. Treat them in such a way that they will sense that you care about them and are there to serve them. Go the extra mile. Ask God to open the way for you to say words to bless them and to express thanks to them and to God.
You have a unique role and assignment in God’s Kingdom. Only YOU can do it. No assignment or job is more important than another in God’s eyes. Remember Gideon in the book of Judges? He felt totally inadequate for the task God called him to do. He believed that he was the least important person in the whole country. Yet God called him and promised, “I will be with you.” Since God was with him, he had no lack. He had everything needed to rid his country of the Midianites who had been attacking, destroying, stealing, and killing in his country for a long time.
If you are a follower of Jesus, the promise in Hebrews 13:5 is for you: “I will never leave you or forsake you.” Just as God was with Gideon, He is with YOU. You have no lack. You can be an effective force of transformation in the place where you work.
