Why Should a Christian Build an Emergency Fund?
God does not want us to live from paycheck to paycheck, getting into debt every time an emergency arises. Here are some Scriptures that throw light on this:
Proverbs 21:20
“Precious treasure and oil are in the house of the wise, but a foolish person devours all he has.”
Proverbs 13:11
“Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.”
Proverbs 6:6–8
“Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise. It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.”
Proverbs 21:5
“The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.”
Genesis 41:34–36
“Let Pharaoh appoint commissioners over the land to take a fifth of the harvest of Egypt during the seven years of abundance. They should collect all the food of these good years that are coming and store up the grain… This food should be held in reserve for the country, to be used during the seven years of famine.”
1 Corinthians 16:2
“On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper, so that contributions will not have to be made when I come.”
(This verse is about saving money to give._
These Scriptures are paraphrased. I encourage you to look them up and ask God to use them for motivation to save for emergencies and for giving.
