Heat Wave
As I write this, much of the United States is engulfed by a humid heat wave. People are trying to deal with the heat by going into air conditioned places and by drinking lots of fluids. People can die from intense heat like this, so precautions are necessary. People are advised to not stay out in the heat for long periods of time and to stay hydrated.
An Eternal Heat Wave
Someone on Facebook posted “Hell is hotter than this, and there is no relief.” That’s a scary thought. In Luke 16 we read that Jesus told about the beggar Lazarus and the rich man. Both died, and Lazarus went to Paradise, but the rich man went to hell. The rich man was begging for Lazarus to put just a drop of water on his tongue. That was impossible because they were separated by a huge chasm. The rich didn’t want any of his friends or relatives to end up where he was and begged for Lazarus to go back to warn them. But Jesus said that if they didn’t believe the Scriptures that they already had, they would not believe even if a dead person rose to life to warn them.
Of course, when Jesus died on the cross, and then rose back to life, most people still would not believe. That continues today. In spite of all the Bibles we have, all the miracles that God is doing, all the radio and TV preachers, all the Christian books and music, and all the people who are sharing their faith in Christ, most will not believe. Unfortunately, unless they turn away from their sin and believe in Jesus, they are headed for an eternal heat wave.
In Matthew 7:13-14 Jesus teaches us that there is a wide gate and a broad road that lead to destruction, which is an eternity separated from God in hell. But there is a small gate and a narrow road that leads to eternal life, and only a few will find it. It’s not that God has blocked anyone from going through the small gate to get onto the narrow road. It’s just that people love to live in sin and unbelief and don’t really yearn after the things of God. (Some people will even be offended by this blog post and will unsubscribe because we would dare to talk about a real place called hell.) God loves us and wants us to turn to Him and to get on His road. But in His love, He does not force us. He gives us the choice.
If you are not sure if you are going to heaven and want to make sure that you do not have to face the heat wave of hell, read our page “How to Know God.” You will find out how simple it is to call on the Lord Jesus to save you from your sin and to let Him take over your life. We don’t do this as a “fire insurance policy.” Knowing Jesus is wonderful! Once we get on His road and learn to walk on it with Him, we experience closeness with Him, healing of past hurts, peace, joy, blessings, and so much more.
