Busy Moms Need A Devos Break!
Mom’s Time Out With God
I watch my energetic grandchildren bouncing around, calling for mommy, talking, crying, laughing, and go, go, going. They have a whole series of needs and wants throughout the day, and usually it’s “mommy” that they call upon for help.
I watch in awe as my daughters juggle taking care of them, cleaning the house, homeschooling, serving in the church, cooking, doing laundry, grocery shopping, and meeting the needs of family and friends. Their lives are full of activities and on the go constantly. I remember my days of young motherhood also, and I remember how difficult it can be in the midst of all the action to take time out to spend time with God.
But in the midst of a non-stop life, it’s important for busy moms to stop for a few minutes and get their spirits recharged. It’s easy to feel burned out, tired, irritable, or impatient when there are so many demands on you as you care for your children. Taking time out for devos (devotions) supercharges your day, tunes up your outlook, helps you experience God’s presence, gives you wisdom, and tunes up your heart with God’s love. When you’re in tune with God you make better decisions and can experience peace, joy, and patience in the middle of what could normally make you feel like you’re going crazy.
If you’re having a hard time finding time for devos, try to resist the urge to clean the kitchen or get on Facebook when the kids are quiet. Or get up a bit earlier, or take some moments as soon as they go to bed. Or work out a deal with your husband for 15 minutes of time alone with God while he watches the kids. (And don’t forget to give him time for his devos too!) Ask God for wisdom as to how to make time each day to spend with Him.
Once they are out of babyhood, your kids can take a short quiet time break each day. Teach them to pray, look at Bible story books, listen to a CD of Christian music, watch a Bible story DVD, or color Bible story pictures. You can also tell them to listen and hear what God is saying to them and draw a picture of it. While they do that, you can have your own quiet time. Helping them to form the habit at a young age will help them make time with God a priority when they’re older. They’ll see that it’s important for you, and that will help it become important to them as well.
When you spend time with God, your day will go so much better!
Here’s another idea. Let your kids watch devotions on You Tube while you have your devos!
